The History of PM²

A timeline of the history of PM²

The development of the PM² methodology began in 2007 and the first version was released for the EU institutions in 2008. The first open-access publication, the “PM² Guide—Open Edition”, was published in November 2016 under an open-source license. The PM² Methodology started as an internal project of the European Commission and was originally applied only to IT projects. The IT language was removed and was made more generic to allow its use for non-IT projects. The European Council was one of the first to join and then the External Action Services, the European Central Bank, The European Investment Bank, the Court of Justice as well as many decentralised and executive agencies. PM²’s first version called Open PM² or the PM² Guidelines Open Edition was released to the general public and is available to all members states, public administration, consulting firms doing business with the institutions, the private sector industry, and all European citizens. The goal was to provide open access to the PM² Project Management Methodology and the overall PM² Offering to all European Union Institutions, European Agencies, Service Providers, Public Administrations in the Member States as well as the European private sector. Between 2016 and 2020, the PM² Methodology was supported by ISA² European Programme and it is also supported as an initiative by Digital Europe Programme.
